The GTU syllabus for every course, semester and subject is published by Gujarat Technological University on its own syllabus portal, where you search by course and branch or by subject code and get the official PDF. Each PDF gives you the teaching scheme (lecture, tutorial and practical hours with credits), the examination scheme (how marks are split between college assessment and the university exam) and the unit-wise content with suggested reading.
GTU affiliates hundreds of colleges across Gujarat for diploma engineering, BE, pharmacy, architecture, management and computer applications. Because syllabi are revised batch by batch, your seniors' notes may follow an older version. This page shows you how to get the right one and use it to study smarter.

How to download the GTU syllabus officially
- Open the GTU syllabus portal at syllabus.gtu.ac.in.
- Choose your programme: diploma, degree engineering, pharmacy, management and so on.
- Select the branch and the semester you are in.
- A list of subjects appears with their codes. Click a subject to open its PDF.
- If you know the subject code from your timetable, exam form or marksheet, search with it directly; this is the fastest way to land on the correct version.
Courses and semesters covered
| Programme group | Examples | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma | Civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, electronics and communication, chemical, pharmacy, architecture | 6 semesters |
| Degree engineering (BE) | Computer, IT, civil, mechanical, electrical, EC, chemical, automobile, biomedical and newer branches | 8 semesters |
| Pharmacy | B.Pharm, M.Pharm | 8 semesters for B.Pharm |
| Management and computing | BBA, BCA, MBA, MCA, integrated MCA | MBA and MCA: 4 semesters |
| Postgraduate engineering | ME in many specialisations | 4 semesters |
Architecture, design, hotel management, planning and a few science programmes also sit on the portal. Lengths above are the usual duration; lateral entry students join the BE in the third semester.
Reading a GTU syllabus PDF the right way
Every subject file follows the same layout, and each part tells you something useful.
- Teaching scheme: hours per week for lecture (L), tutorial (T) and practical (P), and the credits. A four credit subject affects your SPI more than a two credit one, so plan your effort accordingly.
- Examination scheme: the maximum marks for the university theory exam, college internal assessment, and the practical or viva component.
- Content table: units or chapters with the teaching hours and, in many subjects, a percentage weight for each unit.
- Distribution of marks by level: some files show how much of the paper tests remembering, understanding and applying.
- Reference books and course outcomes: the titles your faculty base lectures on, and the skills the course promises you will gain.
Marks split and passing in degree courses
In the BE scheme, many theory subjects carry 70 marks for the university's end semester exam and 30 marks for college assessment through a mid semester test and continuous work. Practicals are assessed through internal marks for lab work and a viva at the end of the term, with an examiner from outside your college in the senior semesters. You must clear each component on its own; a strong internal score does not rescue a failed external paper.
Results come as letter grades on a ten point scale, from AA at the top through AB, BB, BC, CC, CD and DD, with FF meaning fail. Your SPI each semester and CPI overall are credit weighted averages of these points. Rules on minimum marks, attendance and backlogs are in the academic regulations for your batch, so check them on the university website instead of relying on hostel rumours.
Using the GTU syllabus to plan semester study
- Start with unit weights. Where the content table gives percentages, two or three units often add up to half the paper. Master those first.
- Match old papers to your code. GTU uploads earlier university papers subject by subject. Use only those for your current subject code, or for an older code whose units match.
- Use the practical list. The list of experiments doubles as a viva question bank; examiners ask about what you performed.
- Treat references as the depth guide. If the syllabus lists a standard textbook, its solved examples show the level the paper expects.
First year BE subjects in brief
The first two semesters of BE are largely common across branches. Typical subjects include engineering mathematics, physics, basic electrical engineering, basic mechanical and civil engineering, programming for problem solving, engineering graphics, English and environmental science, along with workshop practice. The exact pairing in semester 1 and semester 2 depends on your branch group and batch, so read the list for your branch on the portal.
Diploma first year likewise builds a base in mathematics, applied science, communication skills and basic engineering drawing and workshop before the branch subjects begin.
When the syllabus changes
GTU revises its curricula from time to time, and a revision usually starts with the incoming first year batch while senior batches finish on their old scheme. That is why a friend one year ahead may have a different subject list. Backlog students generally appear under the scheme of their own batch; confirm this through circulars on the GTU site before you prepare for a remedial exam.
If you are heading to GTU from school, the entrance stage comes first; our entrance exams hub explains the tests that feed engineering and pharmacy admissions, including the JEE Main syllabus. Diploma students in Maharashtra can compare a similar structure on the MSBTE K scheme syllabus page.
Frequently asked questions
Which site has the official GTU syllabus?
On the university's syllabus portal, syllabus.gtu.ac.in. Choose the course, branch and semester, or search by subject code, and open the PDF for each subject.
Why is my subject code different from my senior's?
Curriculum revisions give subjects new codes for new batches. Always follow the code printed on your own exam form, as the paper is set from that syllabus.
What is the theory marks split in GTU BE?
Many theory subjects have 70 marks for the university end semester exam and 30 for college assessment, but the exact split is printed in the examination scheme box of each subject PDF. Check it there.
Does GTU give unit-wise weightage?
Many subject PDFs list a teaching hours figure and a percentage weight against each unit. Where it is given, use it to decide what to study first.
Is the diploma syllabus on the same portal?
Yes. Diploma engineering, diploma pharmacy and diploma architecture syllabi are listed under the diploma section, semester by semester.
Where can I find GTU previous question papers?
GTU publishes past university exam papers on its official website. Pick the subject code that matches your syllabus to make sure the questions fit what you are studying.
