FCI Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Category III Posts

SSC and centralGraduate levelCentral PSUUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The FCI syllabus for Category III posts, such as Assistant Grade III, Junior Engineer and Stenographer Grade II, starts with a common 100 mark Phase I screening test in English, reasoning, numerical aptitude and general studies, followed by a Phase II that changes with the post you apply for. Phase I only shortlists you; your final rank comes from Phase II.

This page follows the scheme in the most recent Category III advertisement of the Food Corporation of India. Manager posts (Category II) and watchman posts (Category IV) are recruited through separate notifications with their own pattern, so check those notices if you are aiming at them.

Stages of FCI Category III recruitment

  • Phase I: one common online test for every post. Its score is dropped when merit is prepared; about 15 times the number of vacancies, category wise, move to Phase II.
  • Phase II: post specific online papers. Merit lists are drawn from these marks.
  • Skill test: only for Steno Grade II, a qualifying typing and shorthand test in English after Paper III.
  • Document verification and medical: for up to three times the vacancies, followed by medical fitness before appointment.

Recruitment is zone wise (North, South, East, West and North East), and your merit is ranked within the zone and post you applied for.

FCI exam pattern for Phase I

The software locks each block after 15 minutes, which means time saved on English cannot be spent on numerical aptitude. Every incorrect response takes away 0.25 of that item's value, while skipped items are simply not scored.

When two candidates tie on a post with Paper II, the one with more Paper II marks is placed higher, so the subject paper decides close finishes.

Common subjects in the FCI exam syllabus

The notice names the sections but not a topic list for them. Based on the level of the papers, these are the areas you should prepare:

  • English: reading comprehension, cloze passages, error spotting, sentence improvement, fillers, vocabulary and jumbled sentences.
  • Reasoning: seating and floor puzzles, inequality statements, syllogisms, codes, family trees, directions, ranks and letter or number series.
  • Numerical aptitude: quick calculation and approximation, missing number series, tables and charts for data interpretation, and arithmetic word problems (percentages, ratios, mean values, business profit, interest, pipes and work, motion, mensuration).

Preparing for the two phases together

Phase I and Paper I share the same four subjects, so prepare them once at the harder Paper I level and Phase I will feel lighter. The 15 minute section clocks in Phase I reward speed, while Paper I gives 30 minutes to a 45 question general studies block.

  1. Spend the first six weeks on numerical aptitude and reasoning, with a 15 minute timed set every day.
  2. Add English reading daily and a current affairs digest from the past eight to ten months.
  3. If your post has Paper II, start it by week four: it carries 120 marks and decides ties.
  4. In the last month, take full Phase I and Phase II mocks on alternate days.
Nikhil, a B.Com graduate in Lucknow, applied for AG III Accounts. He found that the accountancy and GST topics overlapped his college syllabus, so he did one hour of Paper II revision each morning and kept evenings for reasoning and maths, the sections that had kept him out of a bank exam before.

The common papers look much like the SSC CGL syllabus and the IBPS clerk syllabus, so material for those works here too. JE aspirants should compare the SSC JE syllabus, and more central exams are listed on the SSC and central exams hub.

FCI does not hold Category III recruitment every year, and a fresh advertisement may alter the scheme. Check the latest notice on the FCI website before you plan your preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Are Phase I marks counted in the FCI final merit?

No. Phase I is only a screening test that shortlists about 15 candidates per vacancy for Phase II. Your rank depends on Phase II marks.

Do wrong answers reduce my FCI score?

They do. In both online phases, 0.25 of an item's marks is subtracted for each mistake, and anything you leave unmarked neither gains nor loses.

What is the FCI exam pattern for Assistant Grade III General?

AG III General candidates take the 100 mark Phase I and then only Paper I in Phase II, worth 120 marks in 90 minutes. Selection for this post rests on Paper I alone.

What qualification is needed for FCI Assistant Grade III?

A graduate degree with computer proficiency for General and Depot, B.Com for Accounts, and a relevant science or agriculture degree for Technical. AG III Hindi needs a degree with Hindi as the main subject and a translation qualification.

Does the FCI steno post have a typing test?

Yes. Steno Grade II candidates take Paper III and then a qualifying English typing and shorthand test. The last notice asked for 40 words per minute typing and 80 words per minute shorthand.

What are the age relaxations for FCI posts?

Under the last notice, SC and ST candidates get 5 years, non creamy layer OBC applicants 3 years and persons with disability 10 years over the post's upper limit. Check the newest advertisement for the current values.
