Four 100 mark papers: communication, accounting, economics, laws and management

CSEET syllabus: the restructured four paper test

EntranceAfter class 12400 marksUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The CSEET syllabus is now split into four papers, each worth 100 marks: Business Communication, Fundamentals of Accounting, Economic and Business Environment, and Business Laws and Management. ICSI restructured the test so that three papers are written answer papers of 3 hours and the fourth is an OMR paper of 2 hours, all taken at exam centres over four days.

If you remember the old CSEET as a short online MCQ test of 200 marks taken from home, forget that picture. The new format asks you to write, calculate and explain. This page covers the cseet exam pattern, the chapters of every paper, the passing rule and preparation advice shaped around each paper.

CSEET exam pattern under the new format

Each paper is held on a separate day. Papers start at 2:30 pm, and every paper gives you 15 minutes to read the question paper before you begin writing.

CSEET paper structure as announced by ICSI
DayPaperMarksTypeTime
1Business Communication100Subjective3 hours
2Fundamentals of Accounting100Subjective3 hours
3Economic and Business Environment100Subjective3 hours
4Business Laws and Management100OMR based objective2 hours

ICSI has said wrong answers in the OMR paper carry no penalty. The number of questions in each paper is not fixed in the announcement, so look at the first official question papers and any model papers ICSI puts out before you plan your timing.

The restructured test replaced the remote proctored format, and the viva voce of the early CSEET is not part of it. Read the official ICSI announcement on the restructured CSEET for fees, dates and session windows.

Paper 1: Business Communication

This paper tests whether you can write clean, correct English for work. It has four chapters:

  1. Essentials of Good English: grammar, usage, vocabulary and sentence construction.
  2. Communication: the process, types, barriers and the qualities of effective communication.
  3. Business Correspondence: letters, emails, notices, circulars, memos and other office writing.
  4. Common Business Terminologies: words and phrases used in companies, banking, trade and corporate offices.

Because answers are written, marks go to format, tone and accuracy. A letter with the right layout but careless grammar will lose marks it would not have lost in an MCQ test.

Paper 2: Fundamentals of Accounting

This is the paper that surprises students who skipped accounts in school. It is entirely new to CSEET and has eight chapters:

  • Basic concepts and principles of accounting
  • Accounting process: journal, ledger and trial balance
  • Bank reconciliation statement
  • Depreciation and amortisation
  • Final accounts of a sole proprietor
  • Partnership and LLP accounts
  • Introduction to company accounts
  • Accounting for non profit organisations

Expect numerical questions where working notes and neat formats matter. If you studied commerce in class 11 and 12, most of this will feel familiar; if you came from science or humanities, start this paper first.

Paper 3: Economic and Business Environment

Two parts of 50 marks each.

Paper 3 chapter list
PartChapters
A: Economics (50)Demand and supply and forms of market competition; national income accounting; the Indian Union Budget; Indian financial markets; Indian economy
B: Business Environment (50)Entrepreneurship scenario; business environment; key government institutions; global environment; environmental governance; smart technology and the business environment; elements of corporate governance

Part B is close to current affairs. Questions on the Budget, regulators and global bodies reward students who read a good newspaper and connect events to the chapters.

Paper 4: Business Laws and Management

This is the one objective paper, and your responses are filled in bubbles for machine marking.

  • Part A, Business Laws (60 marks): introduction to law, elements of company law, law of contracts, partnership and LLP law, sale of goods law and negotiable instruments law.
  • Part B, Business Management (40 marks): introduction to management; functions such as planning, organising, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting and budgeting; principles of management and modern approaches; and management knowledge for company secretaries.

Law questions here test definitions, essentials of a valid contract, types of companies and the rights of parties. Learn the key sections in plain words rather than memorising long text.

Passing rules and what the result lets you do

The pass line is 40 percent per paper together with an aggregate of 50 percent, which works out to 200 of 400, and both must come in a single sitting. Marks do not carry forward and there is no paper wise exemption.

A pass result stays valid for one year, and you must register for the CS Executive Programme within that time. Graduates, postgraduates, final year degree students and those who have cleared CA Final or CMA Final can register for CS Executive directly without CSEET. The CS Executive stage is covered on our CS Executive syllabus page.

Preparing for the CSEET syllabus paper by paper

Three written papers mean you must practise writing under time, not just reading.

  • Weeks 1 to 3: accounts basics every day, from journal entries to final accounts. Pair it with one communication chapter a week.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: economics Part A, then partnership and company accounts. Start one letter or email draft every two days.
  • Weeks 7 and 8: laws and management for Paper 4, with short daily OMR style quizzes you set for yourself from the chapter headings.
  • Final two weeks: four full papers on four days, timed, mimicking the real schedule.
Kunal is in class 12 science and plans to take CSEET in the October session. He has never studied accounts. He spends his first month only on Paper 2 basics for an hour a day, using the class 11 accountancy NCERT, and writes one formal email in English on Sundays. By the time board exams end, the accounting chapters no longer feel foreign and he can give the last weeks to Papers 3 and 4.

Study material and the official syllabus

ICSI provides study material with registration, and its restructured CSEET syllabus document is the checklist you should tick off chapter by chapter. NCERT class 11 and 12 accountancy and business studies textbooks are a good bridge for Papers 2 and 4, and the class 12 economics books help with Part A of Paper 3.

If you are weighing other commerce routes, compare this test with the CA Foundation syllabus and the CMA Foundation syllabus, or browse every test after school on the entrance exams hub.

Frequently asked questions

What does the CSEET new syllabus include?

It has four papers: Business Communication, Fundamentals of Accounting, Economic and Business Environment, and Business Laws and Management. The first three are subjective papers of 3 hours and the last is an OMR paper of 2 hours, each for 100 marks.

Is CSEET still an online exam from home?

No. The remote proctored format ended with the January session before the change. The restructured CSEET is written by hand at designated centres in major cities.

Is there negative marking in CSEET?

ICSI has stated that the OMR paper on Business Laws and Management carries no deduction for wrong answers. The other three papers are written answer papers, where you are marked on what you write.

Which marks clear the CSEET?

Score 40 or more in every paper and 200 or more across all four, in the same sitting. Failing one paper means taking all four again.

Who is exempt from CSEET?

Graduates and postgraduates, degree students who have reached their last year, and those who have passed the ICSI Foundation, CA Final or CMA Final can register for CS Executive directly.

How often does ICSI hold CSEET?

Three times, in the first week of February, June and October, with results by the last week of March, July and November.
