The CMA syllabus set by ICMAI, the national body for cost and management accountants, runs across three levels and 20 papers: four at Foundation, eight at Intermediate in two groups, and eight at Final in two groups, with one elective chosen from three options. Every paper carries 100 marks under the scheme now in force, which replaced the older structure in ICMAI's most recent revision.
This guide lists every paper at each level, shows how the CMA final syllabus is split between Group III and Group IV, and explains the pass rules, exemptions and training you must complete. If you want topic by topic detail for the first two levels, use the CMA Foundation syllabus and CMA Inter syllabus pages.

Foundation papers
- Paper 1: Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication (laws 80%, communication 20%)

- Paper 3: Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics (mathematics 40%, statistics 60%)

Foundation papers are objective, multiple choice papers. You need 40% in each paper and 200 out of 400 overall. Detailed chapter lists are on the CMA Foundation syllabus page.
Intermediate papers in two groups
| Group I | Group II |
|---|---|
| Paper 5: Business Laws and Ethics | Paper 9: Operations Management and Strategic Management |
| Paper 6: Financial Accounting | Paper 10: Corporate Accounting and Auditing |
| Paper 7: Direct and Indirect Taxation | Paper 11: Financial Management and Business Data Analytics |
| Paper 8: Cost Accounting | Paper 12: Management Accounting |
You can write one group or both in the same term. Practical training can begin at this stage, and ICMAI also asks Intermediate students to complete a set number of hours of skills training before they move up.
CMA final syllabus: Group III and Group IV
| Group III | Group IV |
|---|---|
| Paper 13: Corporate and Economic Laws | Paper 17: Cost and Management Audit |
| Paper 14: Strategic Financial Management | Paper 18: Corporate Financial Reporting |
| Paper 15: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation | Paper 19: Indirect Tax Laws and Practice |
| Paper 16: Strategic Cost Management | Paper 20: one elective (see below) |
Paper 20 electives
- 20A: Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation
- 20B: Risk Management in Banking and Insurance
- 20C: Entrepreneurship and Start Up
You pick the elective when you enrol for Final. Within Group III, the syllabus splits Paper 13 into corporate laws and economic laws, Paper 15 into domestic direct tax and international taxation, and Paper 16 into cost management for decisions and quantitative techniques, with corporate laws, domestic tax and the decision making part carrying the larger share. Final papers are of three hours and mix objective questions with descriptive and case based ones.
Pass marks, exemptions and training
- Pass rule: at least 40% in every paper and 50% in aggregate. At Intermediate and Final the aggregate is counted group by group, over the papers you actually write.
- Exemption: if you appear in all papers of a group and reach 60 marks in some paper while missing the group pass, that paper is exempted. The exemption lasts for the next three attempts and appears on your mark sheet automatically.
- Training: practical training (listed as 15 months), skills training hours at Intermediate and Final, and an industry oriented training programme for Final students.
- Validity: Intermediate registration stays valid for seven years.
Where students lose marks
Pass percentages at Intermediate and Final are low, and the usual reason is a single weak paper pulling a group below the line rather than a poor total. Taxation and the law papers change with every Finance Act and amendment, so study from the material ICMAI releases for your exam term, not an older edition. Costing papers (8, 12 and 16) reward speed with formats and working notes, which only come from writing full answers by hand. At Final, Strategic Financial Management and Corporate Financial Reporting are lengthy; timed practice with past papers is the best defence against leaving questions unfinished.
Planning your attempts
Most students need about six months of steady study per Intermediate or Final group. Writing both groups together saves a term but doubles the risk, so judge it by your hours, not by what friends are doing.
Use the official study material, revision test papers and mock tests that ICMAI publishes for each term, and solve at least two past papers per subject under exam conditions in the last month.
CMA compared with CA and CS
All three are professional courses with Foundation level entry after school. CMA leans towards costing, management accounting and strategy, the CA syllabus is centred on financial reporting, audit and tax, and the CS Executive syllabus is built around company law and governance. The Indian CMA is also different from the US CMA, which is a separate certification offered by a US body with its own two part exam.
