Two written papers, English and GK, then a 200 mark SSB for OTA Chennai

CDS OTA Syllabus and Marking Scheme

Defence and policeAny graduate400 marks in allUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The CDS OTA syllabus covers just two written papers, English and General Knowledge, worth 100 marks apiece, with maths left out for the Officers Training Academy. After the written test comes a 200 mark SSB interview, so the full OTA merit list is drawn out of 400.

That makes OTA the lightest written route into the officer cadre through the Combined Defence Services exam, and it is the entry through which women graduates join via CDS in the latest notification. Here is what each paper asks, how marks are counted, and how to prepare when you only have two subjects to master.

OTA selection in three steps

Your journey to OTA Chennai has three gates. Gate one is a pen and OMR test, sat alongside every other CDS candidate on a common date. If you clear UPSC's qualifying marks, the Services Selection Board calls you for a five day process of screening, psychological tests, group tasks and an interview. Recommended candidates then face a medical board, and the final order of merit adds your written and SSB scores.

The written papers are worth 200 and the SSB 200, so the interview is half your final total. Plenty of OTA hopefuls see the written stage as everything and then lose ground at SSB; plan for both from the start.

With 120 questions carrying 100 marks, one correct answer is worth five sixths of a mark. A wrong answer loses a third of that, close to 0.28. Put simply, three wrong guesses wipe out almost one right answer, so bubble a hunch only after striking out a pair of options. Marking more than one bubble also counts as wrong.

Women and men compete on separate OTA merit lists, and each list has its own vacancies, which the notification lists as tentative.

CDS OTA syllabus: the English paper

UPSC's own description of this paper is a single line about grasp of the language and practical command of vocabulary. On the question sheet that becomes:

  • Error spotting, where you pick the part of a sentence with a grammatical slip
  • Rearranging jumbled parts of a sentence, and putting sentences of a passage in order
  • Choosing a better phrase to replace an underlined part
  • Vocabulary in context: meanings, opposites and picking the fitting word for a gap
  • Idioms and phrasal verbs
  • Comprehension passages and cloze tests

For OTA this paper carries as much weight as GK, and it is the one where steady practice raises your score fastest. Grammar rules on subject verb agreement, tenses, articles and prepositions settle a large share of error spotting questions.

General Knowledge paper for OTA

Officially the paper tests current events and the science behind daily life at the level any well read graduate should manage, with Indian history and geography named on top. Recent papers pull from:

  • Everyday science: school level physics and chemistry, biology with health and disease, discoveries and inventions
  • Indian history: early civilisations, kingdoms and empires, colonial rule, the freedom struggle
  • Geography: landforms, rivers and climate of India, world physical geography, resources
  • Indian polity: constitutional bodies, rights and duties, Parliament and the courts
  • Economy: basic terms, banking, the budget
  • Defence and current affairs: military exercises, equipment, ranks, awards, appointments, sports and world events from roughly the past year

Choosing OTA alone or with other academies

When you apply only for OTA, you write two papers. Add any of IMA, INA or AFA to your preferences and you sit all three, and UPSC counts only your English and GK marks for the OTA list while adding maths for the others. That second route costs you a third paper and extra preparation, so pick it only if you meet the other academies' rules and want them.

Eligibility differs by academy. OTA asks for a degree in any discipline and the 19 to 25 age band, while the others have tighter ages and subject rules. Our CDS eligibility page covers marital status, final year students and physical standards in detail, and the CDS syllabus page has the elementary maths topics if you decide to add the other academies.

A study plan built for the CDS syllabus for OTA

Two papers means you can go deeper than an IMA aspirant could. Split each week roughly evenly between them, and use the GK hours on static subjects first, current affairs later.

Ritika, a BCom graduate working in a bank, has five months before the CDS sitting and wants the OTA women's entry. On weekdays she gives 45 minutes to a single English section drill, then reviews each mistake, and 45 minutes to one GK block from NCERT books, polity and history first. Sundays are for a fortnightly current affairs sheet and, from the third month, a full English or GK paper under the two hour limit. During the final month a weekly run joins the routine so she reaches SSB in shape.

For books, the middle and high school NCERT books build the GK base subject by subject; a standard grammar workbook and daily reading of an English newspaper serve the English paper.

Getting ready for the 200 mark SSB

Since the SSB is worth as much as both written papers, start early. Read the newspaper aloud to build fluency, take part in group discussions with friends, and keep a short diary of your own achievements and responsibilities, which helps with the personal interview and self description test. Physical fitness matters for the group tasks and later for the medical board.

UPSC can change the scheme, vacancies or age bands in any cycle. Open the current CDS notice at upsc.gov.in first and confirm OTA dates and rules for women in that notice.

For other officer routes after graduation, compare the AFCAT syllabus or line up every officer route side by side using the defence and police exams listing.

Frequently asked questions

Is maths included in the CDS OTA syllabus?

No. For this academy you face just the English and GK papers. Maths is needed only if you also choose IMA, INA or AFA.

What total is the OTA merit list based on?

The written exam carries 200 marks and the SSB interview 200, making 400 in all.

What penalty do CDS OTA papers apply for errors?

The penalty equals a third of what the question carries. Since each question in English and GK is worth about 0.83 marks, a wrong answer costs roughly 0.28.

Can women apply for CDS OTA?

Yes. In the latest notification, unmarried women graduates aged 19 to 25 can apply for OTA, while widows and divorcees without children who have not married again qualify under set conditions. Check the current notice for any change.

Is the CDS OTA paper easier than IMA?

Every academy takes the identical English and GK papers. OTA is lighter only because there is no maths paper, but the competition for its seats is still stiff.

Can final year degree students try for OTA?

Usually yes, on a provisional basis. You must later show your degree result by a deadline that UPSC fixes in each notice, so mark that deadline early.
