The CBSE class 11 chemistry syllabus has nine units, tested through a 70-mark written paper lasting 3 hours, plus 30 practical marks covering volumetric analysis, salt analysis and a project. Every unit maps to a chapter of the rationalised NCERT Chemistry Part I and Part II books for class 11.
Here you will see the marks of each unit, what each chapter includes, how the practical marks are divided, which units matter most for entrance exams and a plan for working through the year. Physical chemistry carries the largest share of marks, while organic chemistry starts here and continues into class 12.

Class 11 chemistry syllabus: units and marks
CBSE gives a mark allotment for each unit. Class 11 papers are set and marked by your school, but they are expected to follow this split.
| Unit | Title | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I | Some basic concepts of chemistry | 7 |
| II | Structure of atom | 9 |
| III | Classification of elements and periodicity in properties | 6 |
| IV | Chemical bonding and molecular structure | 7 |
| V | Chemical thermodynamics | 9 |
| VI | Equilibrium | 7 |
| VII | Redox reactions | 4 |
| VIII | Organic chemistry: some basic principles and techniques | 11 |
| IX | Hydrocarbons | 10 |
| Total | 70 | |
Roughly, physical chemistry (units I, II, V, VI and VII) carries 36 marks, inorganic (units III and IV) 13, and organic (units VIII and IX) 21.

| Salt analysis (finding the cation and anion present) | 8 |
| Experiment on a theory topic | 6 |
| Investigatory project, with questions on it | 4 |
| Lab file, with questions on it | 4 |

Experiments include basic laboratory techniques, characterisation and purification of chemical substances, pH experiments, chemical equilibrium, quantitative estimation by titration, and qualitative tests that reveal which ions a given salt contains. Your school lab manual lists the exact set.
Which units matter most for NEET and JEE
Entrance exams treat class 11 chemistry as half their syllabus. The units that most often feed into entrance questions are mole concept, structure of atom, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, equilibrium and general organic chemistry, because class 12 chapters build on them.
- General organic chemistry (unit VIII) decides how well you will handle every organic chapter in class 12.
- Equilibrium and thermodynamics are calculation-heavy; practise numericals weekly.
- Periodicity and bonding reward memory plus reasoning, and repeat in many forms.
For the full entrance scope, read the NEET chemistry syllabus and the JEE Main syllabus.
A year plan for class 11 chemistry
- April to July: basic concepts, structure of atom and periodicity. Make a formula sheet for mole calculations.
- August to October: chemical bonding, thermodynamics and equilibrium. Solve every in-text and back exercise in NCERT.
- November to December: redox reactions and general organic chemistry. Draw mechanisms by hand.
- January to February: hydrocarbons, full revision and practice of the practical file and viva.
Frequently asked questions
How many units does the class 11th chemistry syllabus have?
There are nine units, each matching a chapter of the NCERT class 11 chemistry books. Older editions had more chapters; states of matter, hydrogen, the s-block and p-block chapters and environmental chemistry are not part of the rationalised class 11 list.
Which unit has the highest marks in the 11th chemistry syllabus?
Organic chemistry: some basic principles and techniques carries 11 marks, followed by hydrocarbons with 10. Structure of atom and thermodynamics carry 9 each.
Does the class 11 chemistry syllabus NCERT books cover everything?
For the school exam, yes. CBSE follows the rationalised NCERT textbooks, so the NCERT chapters and exercises define the scope of your school exam.
Is class 11 chemistry a board exam?
No. Class 11 exams are conducted by your school, though schools are expected to follow the CBSE syllabus and marks allotment.
How important is class 11 chemistry for NEET?
Very. Roughly half of the NEET chemistry syllabus comes from class 11 topics, and units like mole concept, bonding and general organic chemistry support class 12 chapters.
Is there an official PDF of the chemistry class 11 cbse syllabus?
The board's senior secondary curriculum, released every session, is posted on cbseacademic.nic.in. Check the chemistry section there for the latest unit list and practical scheme.
