CA eligibility at the entry level is simple: you can register with ICAI for the foundation course after passing class 10, and you can appear in the foundation exam once you have passed class 12. There is no age limit, no minimum class 12 percentage for this route and no restriction on your stream, so science, commerce and arts students can all join.
Graduates and those who have cleared certain other professional exams can skip foundation and enter at the Intermediate level. This page sets out both routes, the registration timing, how long a registration stays valid and the documents you need. To see what you will study, read the CA foundation syllabus.

CA eligibility for the foundation route
This is the usual path for school students.
- Registration: you may register for the foundation course after passing class 10. You can do this while still in class 11 or 12; your first attempt simply comes after your class 12 exam.
- Appearing: your first foundation attempt comes after you have appeared in the class 12 exam of a recognised board, and you must pass class 12 for it to count.
- Marks: ICAI does not set a minimum class 12 percentage for foundation. Passing class 12 is enough.
- Stream: any stream is accepted. Science and arts students need to work a little harder on accounting, but nothing stops them.
Eligibility for CA foundation registration timing
ICAI asks for a four-month study period before each foundation session, so registration closes on a cut-off date: 1 September for the January exam, 1 January for the May or June exam and 1 May for the September exam, under the current rules. If you register after that date, you move to the next session.
With foundation sessions now running in January, in May or June, and in September, a student gets three chances a year to start. Confirm the cut-off dates on icai.org before you pay the fee, because they are announced for each session.
Direct entry: skipping foundation
The direct entry route lets some candidates register straight for CA Intermediate.
| Who | Minimum condition |
|---|---|
| Commerce graduates or postgraduates | At least 55% marks |
| Graduates or postgraduates of other streams | At least 60% marks |
| Students who passed the Intermediate level of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India | Pass in that Intermediate level |
Final year graduation students can usually register provisionally. Under the current scheme, a direct entry student needs an eight-month study period after Intermediate registration before the first attempt; no articleship is needed before Intermediate. Read the latest ICAI rules for this route before you register.
Age, nationality and attempts
- Age: there is no lower or upper age limit for CA. Working professionals and homemakers also join.
- Nationality: Indian students register in the normal way. Foreign students and students from foreign boards need an equivalence of their school qualification, and should check ICAI rules for their case.
- Attempts: ICAI sets no ceiling on how many times you may write foundation, but each registration has a validity period. Foundation registration stays valid for four years from your first eligible attempt. ICAI's FAQ says revalidation is not allowed at foundation level, so after that you would need to register afresh.
There are no physical or medical standards for the course.
Documents you need
- Your class 10 certificate, which also serves as birth date proof
- Class 12 mark sheet, or a class 12 admit card if the result is awaited
- A recent passport size photo and your signature in digital form
- Proof of nationality where ICAI asks for it, especially for foreign nationals
- For direct entry, graduation or postgraduation mark sheets, or the Intermediate pass certificate of the other professional body
All forms are filled online on the ICAI self service portal, and you upload attested copies where required.
Eligibility for CA exam levels after foundation
After you clear foundation, you register for CA Intermediate and must complete an eight-month study period before writing it. Under current rules, the two-year articleship begins after you pass both groups of Intermediate and finish the four-week ICITSS course, and CA Final comes after a set part of articleship. The details shift with each ICAI scheme update, so the CA intermediate syllabus page and ICAI announcements are the best guides for the next step.
Is CA the right course for you
Since eligibility is open, the real question is commitment. Foundation alone needs four to six months of steady study, and the full course takes several years with articleship. If you prefer cost accounting or company law, compare the CMA foundation syllabus and the CS executive syllabus, both of which also accept students after class 12. The entrance exams hub has more options.
Frequently asked questions
What is the eligibility for CA foundation?
A pass in class 12 from a recognised board is what lets you appear. You may register earlier, after passing class 10, on a provisional basis.
Am I too old or too young to start CA?
No. ICAI has no minimum or maximum age for registering or for writing any CA exam.
Can science or arts students do CA?
Yes. CA eligibility does not depend on your stream. Non-commerce students should start accounting basics early because it is new to them.
What marks do I need in class 12 for CA?
None beyond a pass. The foundation route has no minimum percentage; the percentage rules apply only to graduates using direct entry.
Can I join CA directly after graduation?
Yes, through direct entry. Commerce graduates need at least 55% and other graduates at least 60%, and they start at Intermediate instead of foundation.
How long is CA foundation registration valid?
It is valid for four years from your first eligible attempt. ICAI does not allow revalidation at foundation level, so you would have to register again after that.
