The BPSC AEDO syllabus has three objective papers of 100 marks each: General Language (Hindi and English), General Studies and General Aptitude. The language paper only has to be cleared, while your marks in the other two papers decide your rank for the Assistant Education Development Officer post.
On this page: each paper's pattern, the topics the advertisement lists, how the qualifying rule works, and a sensible split of study hours according to where the scoring marks sit. The commission advertised 935 posts in its latest recruitment for this post, so competition is heavy and every mark in the merit papers counts.

How the AEDO selection works
Selection for this post is short and simple on paper. You sit one written examination made of three objective papers, and candidates who rank high enough are called for document verification. There is no interview, so your written score is the whole story.
Paper 1 tests language and is qualifying. Paper 2 (General Studies) and Paper 3 (General Aptitude) carry the marks that build the merit list. Think of the AEDO exam pattern as a 200 mark contest guarded by a language gate you must not fail.
BPSC AEDO exam pattern at a glance
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Time | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | General Language: Hindi (70) and English (30) | 100 | 100 | 2 hours | Qualifying, at least 30 percent |
| Paper 2 | General Studies | 100 | 100 | 2 hours | Counted for merit |
| Paper 3 | General Aptitude | 100 | 100 | 2 hours | Counted for merit |
All 300 questions carry a single mark apiece, and each wrong pick pulls your score down by 0.33, while a blank stays at zero. Reports of the notification describe the 30 percent minimum as applying to Hindi and English separately, which would mean roughly 21 of 70 in Hindi and 9 of 30 in English. Confirm the exact wording in the advertisement on the commission's site.
Paper 1: General Hindi and General English
The BPSC AEDO English syllabus and the Hindi syllabus together make up this paper. It checks whether you can read, write and understand both languages well enough for office work in the education department. Expect questions on:
- Hindi (larger share): sandhi and samas, synonyms and antonyms, tatsam and tadbhav words, idioms and proverbs, sentence correction, gender and number, one word substitution and unseen passages.
- English: grammar and usage, spotting errors, gap filling, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, sentence improvement and a short comprehension passage.
Since the paper only needs to be cleared, do not overinvest. A steady 30 minutes a day of grammar drills is usually enough for students from a Hindi medium background, while English medium students should give more time to the Hindi part because it carries 70 of the 100 questions.
Paper 2: General Studies with a Bihar focus
General Studies is where the AEDO syllabus leans heavily on Bihar. The topics listed for this paper are:
- General science: everyday physics, chemistry and biology at school level
- Current events, both national and from around the world
- History of India, with Bihar's history and its contributions
- Geography of India and Bihar: physical features, rivers, soils, natural resources
- Indian polity and economy, including governance in the state
- The freedom struggle and changes after independence, with Bihar's role in the national movement
Bihar specific questions tend to separate serious candidates from casual ones. Prepare the state's districts, rivers, ancient seats of learning, the Champaran movement and the major state schemes in education and welfare.
Paper 3: General Aptitude, maths and reasoning
This paper mixes arithmetic with reasoning and is the most scoring part for a well practised candidate.
Arithmetic and data
- Number system, decimals, fractions, simplification
- Ratio and proportion, percentage, average
- Interest (simple and compound), profit and loss
- Mensuration, HCF and LCM, work problems, trains, boats and distance
- Data interpretation from tables and graphs
Reasoning
- Analytical reasoning, problem solving and visual memory
- Similarities and differences, relationships, arithmetical reasoning
- Coding and decoding, plus word based and figure based series
- Statement and conclusion, syllogism
Because errors carry a penalty of a third, accuracy matters more than attempts. Aim to solve a question correctly in under a minute before you push speed.
Where to put your hours
The pattern tells you the priority order. Paper 3 rewards practice, so it should get the most daily time. Paper 2 rewards reading and revision, especially Bihar notes. Paper 1 needs only enough work to stay safely above the minimum.
Keep a running list of your wrong answers in aptitude and revisit it weekly. Most lost marks in this kind of paper come from the same five or six question types repeated.
Books and reading for the AEDO exam
A small, well chosen set of books beats a pile of guides. For General Studies, school NCERT textbooks from class 6 up to class 10 for history, geography, polity and science give the base, and a Bihar general knowledge book adds the state layer. Read a daily newspaper for current events and keep monthly notes. For aptitude, any standard arithmetic and reasoning practice book with chapter wise exercises works. For Hindi grammar, a school level vyakaran book covers almost everything asked. Always keep the official syllabus from the advertisement open beside your notes as a running checklist of what is left.
